Artist, artwork and studio

September 2023: Photographing artist Anna Falcini, her artwork and studio. Anna has just returned from Paris where she has been working on her latest project. She asked me to visit her studio in Herne Bay in order to photograph a series of related artworks. 

The studio, based on a first floor, has lots of natural light. For the shoot, working with natural light, I set up near one of the two windows, photographing individual artworks. Artworks were placed on the floor (one by one) below the camera, which was mounted on the tripod. 

Details of the artist’s sketch books, etc make for good subject matter and give narrative to the photo shoot. Anything showing the artist’s thoughts and mark making, notes, etc is good to include within the photo set.

I particularly liked the process in the above artwork – where the artist tied pens to the branches of a tree and let the movement of the tree move the pens / create the marks on the page. They also added the text using a paint brush held in their mouth.
